The 2025 Follett Lecture - Kaetrena Davis Kendrick

The Low-Morale Experience: Exploring Fractals of the Phenomenon & Considering Humane Library Futures
Kaetrena Kendrick, Follett Chair
Kendrick has been studying and clarifying the causes and development of low-morale experiences in library workplaces since 2016. Her work reveals concerns about interpersonal relationships and behaviors - and how library culture, industry norms, and organizational structures, systems, and policies inadvertently expand low morale for library employees at all levels.
In addition to her numerous published studies, Kendrick has continued identifying and sharing quantitative data and employee narratives revealing significant aspects of the low-morale experience - from the impact of COVID-19 and navigating unionized environments to how harmed library workers are treated when they resign from a toxic workplace.
Join Kendrick for a dynamic conversation revealing key points of her established research and ongoing projects, including the impacts of low-morale experiences on workers and libraries. She will also offer reflections on and share actionable pathways to reducing/interrupting workplace harm, expanding our understanding of care and advocacy, and the role of hope as we reimagine the library-worker-as-person centered futures of GLAM workplaces.
